Student LeadershipWalnut Hill offers a variety of activities and organizations in which students may become involved. Student participation in the life of the School is vital. We encourage students to take advantage of these leadership opportunities, explore ways to take part in and contribute to the community, and ultimately discover possibilities for their own personal growth.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL (CC)

The Community Council is the student governing body of the School. A representative body, it serves to give voice to students in matters of general interest to the School community. The Council makes recommendations for further action to the School Administration. The Community Council works to create a more purposeful, open, and effective School community. The heads of all student committees and associations are accountable to the Council. Members include:

HOUSE COUNCIL

Each dormitory has a House Council that addresses internal issues that affect the well-being of all the individuals within the dormitory. The House Council consists of:

  • Dorm Head
  • Dorm Parents
  • Dorm President
  • Dorm Vice Presidents (if elected)

JOINT HOUSE COUNCIL

The concerns of Dorm Parents and Dorm Presidents are addressed through the Joint House Council. This group meets regularly to coordinate the government of the dormitories, ensuring that procedures are uniform, consistent, and equitable. The Joint House Council consists of:

  • Dean of Students (chairperson)
  • Assistant Dean of Students
  • Director of Student Life
  • President of Community Council
  • Dorm Heads/Dorm Parents
  • Dorm Presidents
  • Day Student Representatives

DORM PRESIDENTS

Dorm Presidents play an important leadership role in the structure and function of the dormitories at Walnut Hill. Appointed each May for the following year, they are respected by the School community for their exemplary qualities of honesty, responsibility, dependability, fairness, leadership, and conduct. They assist with daily dormitory operations. Dorm Presidents are responsible for:

  • Ensuring that school policies are respected
  • Attending Joint House Council meetings and acting as liaisons for students
  • Planning and leading dorm activities
  • Assisting Dorm Parents as needed

In addition, Dorm Presidents build spirit in the dorms, keep the Dorm Parents informed about issues of concern among students, and help with student issues (problems between roommates, for example) and other matters requiring peer mediation.
