in attending Walnut Hill to apply for admission, regardless
of ability to pay tuition.
The 2010-2011 boarding tuition is $44,125 and the day tuition is $33,455.
Please note additional fees are assessed for English as a Second Language classes, International Student Orientation, and a private lesson fee for musicians.
Financial assistance is based on financial need and is only available to United States citizens or permanent residents.
Important Scholarship and Tuition Facts
Decisions about financial aid and scholarships are based on demonstrated financial need, artistic level of audition/portfolio review, and the need of the School for students with particular training and talent.
Last year, 17.6% of the operational budget of Walnut Hill School was committed to financial aid. This percentage of our budget represents approximately $2.9 million committed to providing access to the specialized education offered at the School.
About half of Walnut Hill students receive scholarships.
Walnut Hill School for the Arts offers payment plans to assist families with managing the cost of attending the School.
Tuition supports the operational budget of the School. The yearly operational budget of Walnut Hill is approximately $11 million dollars. 72.5% of the School's tuition income supports student instruction and administration; 16% supports scholarships and 11.5% supports the physical plant.
In addition to tuition income, 10% of the Walnut Hill operational budget is derived from the generous support of donors, foundations, alumni, and friends of the School.
How to Apply for Financial Assistance
Thank you for your interest in Walnut Hill School for the Arts for the 2010-11 school year. You may begin to apply for financial aid starting on November 1, 2009, as described below. Please contact the Office of Admission for deadlines.
Walnut Hill uses School and Student Services (SSS) to process financial aid applications. SSS is a service of the National Association of Independent Schools. Based on the financial information you provide, SSS provides us an estimated amount that your family can contribute to educational expenses. This helps Walnut Hill make fair and objective financial aid decisions. To begin your financial aid application for the 2010-11 enrollment year, follow these steps below:
While completing the application process, families who are United States citizens or Permanent Residents and who wish to apply for financial assistance are encouraged to simultaneously complete the following steps:
ONLINE ($35 flat fee, no matter how many schools selected)
- Starting on November 1, 2009, go to sss.nais.org.
- Click on the prompt to begin your Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS). You only need to complete one PFS, even if there is more than one child applying.
- You will be given a username and password that will allow you to return to your PFS at a later date before submitting it. Your information will be secure.
- You will be given instructions about submitting backup documents to SSS. At Walnut Hill, we require a copy of your most recent Federal Income Tax Return (1040) and W-2s.
Note: If you apply for financial aid online, your information will be delivered accurately and quickly to our school, allowing us to make a quicker decision about your eligibility for financial aid.

Financial Aid application checklist:
- Parents’ Financial Statement submitted to SSS either via online or mail.
- A copy of your 2009 Federal Income Tax Return (1040), including all supporting schedules and W-2s submitted to SSS.
- Form 4506T mailed directly to Walnut Hill. Fill out the top portion (#1-5) and sign at the bottom. Do not date the document and do not pay the fee; just mail it to Walnut Hill.
- Please note: the non-custodial parent who is divorced, separated or was never married MUST complete a Parents’ Financial Statement and submit their 1040 and W-2s to SSS.
Walnut Hill School may request or require additional information in order to make a scholarship determination.
ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE INFORMATION
Each year the Board of Trustees meets in February to establish the tuition for the upcoming year. The boarding and day tuitions for the academic year 2010-2011 have not yet been determined.
Scholarship funding based on financial need is only available to United States citizens or permanent residents.

Tuition loan programs assist many families in making tuition payments more affordable by providing the funds upfront and spreading the payments over a longer period of time than traditional tuition payment plans allow. If you are interested in the provider listed here, please contact them directly for current fees, rates and other details. Most, if not all, are credit-based loans and may have different standards of credit-worthiness. In some cases, as noted, the School must be a participant in the program.
The Sallie Mae K-12 Family Education Loan is available to parents or other creditworthy family members of children attending private elementary, middle, or high school — including prep schools, military school, parochial schools, Montessori schools, boarding schools, and others.
